The One is an illustrated devotional designed to help couples grow in intimacy with one another. Over the course of eight sessions, couples will discover deeper truths about each other, their relationship, and practical ways to build greater intimacy through intentional action.
When people in our culture hear the word intimacy in the context of marriage, they almost immediately think of sex. That is not what The One is about.
Well… at least not entirely.
Sex between husband and wife is one of the most sacred and beautiful gifts God created for the marriage covenant. But we diminish the fullness of intimacy when we reduce it to an act of the body alone.
What if we widened our perspective and began to understand that intimacy in marriage is far richer than we have imagined? That is what I am trying to do with this work.
Many of us enter marriage with the hope that it will make us happy and fulfilled. That is normal, and I even believe it is part of God’s design. Yet if that remains our focus, we soon discover that marriage cannot bear the weight of those expectations, at least not without God’s help.
The goal of The One is to move couples away from the pursuit of a happy equilibrium that so often ends in disappointment and instead place Jesus at the center of their marriage, allowing Him to transform both husband and wife from the inside out. Intimacy is not built through a tit for tat approach, but through a mutual willingness to embrace extraordinary inequity for the good of the other.
This is exactly what Jesus did. He did not build intimacy with us by demanding that we serve Him. He sacrificed everything to love and serve us. That is the path. That is the secret to an abiding love between husband and wife.
